In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

There are many features you can typically find in horror including the last girl, blood and generally having everything darker.I decided that I would take these conventions and apply them to my movie trailer.

In my trailer I have slow, long and wide shots making the characters seem very vulnerable and open to the space around them this is also seen in the film Halloween when the girl is walking down the street. Taking the sound down on the conversation at the very opening of the trailer also gave off a more creepy atmosphere personally making it more engaging.

The location of my trailer was a typical abandoned house, looking rustic and rough. This is very conventional as in the majority of horror films they are located in the middle of nowhere with not much around, apart from over growth ,alley ways and land. I took this conventional idea as I thought it would link to my main idea of being captured, because it means there is no escape.

Having 4 girls and 1 surviving links to the conventional idea of the 'last girl'. It also relates to how women are seen as weak and do not typically survive through violent situations. However I do break the conventions by having the abductor as female as these roles are usually portrayed by males. Males are constantly shown as the more dominant, stronger and more violent sex, however I show that women can be just the same.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From my audience feedback I have learnt that my trailer is 'typically horror' and the genre is easy to identify.
'Typically Horror' was a quote used by one of my audience members when asked why they said it was from the use of eerie music to create a tense atmosphere. The cut shots also help to gain an understanding of the storyline but not to much that it gives the whole thing away. Having the dark and gloomy filters also help to communicate that the ideas of the film are very dark and creepy. All though it is already tense some of my audience said I could have used more quick jump cuts in order to create an even more tense atmosphere.

Another audience member said that the genre is easily identified and they understand it is of the horror genre because of the way in which I have positioned each clip to draw the audience more but to ensure them it wont be easy happy watching and it has a dark twist.

When asked if they would like to see the film following the trailer , they all said yes. They said the trailer showed them just enough to convince them they needed to see it and not too much that they wouldn't need to watch it to understand the story.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My ancillary and trailer go well together and help entice the audience because of the darkness of pictures/videos. I decided to do my poster and DVD cover based on the location of my film, which is an abandoned garage/warehouse. The door is very creepy looking. However to mix things up I used one picture without the silhouette of the person and one with. This was so if someone saw each item they wouldn't be looking at the exact same thing each time and my aim was to draw the audience in my showing a little more each time.
My ancillary links well to my main product because of my idea of showing a little more each time, just like my trailer does throughout the clip.
I think all 3 of my products work really well alongside each other as they are easy to follow and understand, you begin to understand the location from the poster and DVD cover however you would have to watch my trailer to get a bigger idea of what was going on inside 'this door'. I did this because my aim was to make the audience want to watch the trailer. It happens to often that the storyline/plot is given away in the poster/cover and even the name of the film, people begin to figure out their own version of events and feel they don't need to watch it. Having the posters put up publically with just a door not even the person in the window leaves a much more open picture and would entice people to watch my trailer more.
